Anime/CG Comparison - Hekketsuroku

saitou
After seeing the new OP, I feel the urge to make a comparison of the anime and original artworks (game CG or promotional art), since I really enjoy seeing familiar scenes appear in anime.

The anime staff is eager in incorporating CGs into the anime, oftentimes even used in different events. Although anime can't be as detailed as the original art, they deserve credit for trying so hard. :)

Opening & Episode 13

Left: anime season 2 opening.

Right: normal route, final chapter.
In game she's hugging Shinsengumi's "Makato" flag. In anime I guess they want to give more screentime to the asagiiro haori, since it's hard to tell this is a Shinsengumi show after everyone changed to western uniform.
Left: anime season 2 opening.

Right: illustration for novel in Dengeki Girl's Style magazine.

Left: anime episode 13.

Right: Harada's event in common route, after Heisuke becomes Rasetsu.
Left: anime episode 13.

Right: Hijikata's event in common route.
In game it's at dusk, which is fine, but in anime asking "what can I do for you" at bedtime sounds so wrong. XD
Left: anime episode 13 (memory)

Right: Okita's event in common route. Same event as anime.
Left: anime episode 13 (memory)

Right: Hijikata's event in common route. Same event as anime. Except that Hijikata was catching her, not hugging her for no reason. :p

Right: Heisuke's event in common route. Same event as anime.
Left: anime episode 13

Right: cover art of B's-LOG 2008 October issue.

Episode 14

Left: anime episode 14

Right: Saitou route, chapter 6. Same event as anime.

Since the anime follows Hijikata route, some dialogue (and description of Saitou touching Chizuru's cheek) are leftout. But I'm grateful enough this event made it into the anime.
Left: anime episode 14

Right: Hijikata route, chapter 5. Same event as anime.
Left: anime episode 14

Right: Harada route, chapter 7.
Left: anime episode 14

Right: Harada's battle stance.
I made this screencap in the same event. Even the background is similar.

Episode 15

Left: anime episode 15 (memory)

Right: Harada's event in common route. Same event as anime.
Left: anime episode 15

Right: Harada route, chapter 7, before departure.
It's not the same event. But it's a pleasant surprise to see it used here since I love this "best friends forever" feeling.

Episode 16

Left: anime episode 16

Right: Kondou route in Hakuouki Zuisouroku.
Left: anime episode 16

Right: Hijikata route, chapter 6, same event as anime.
Left: anime episode 16

Episode 17

Left: anime episode 17

Left: anime episode 17

Right: Hijikata route, chapter 7, same event as anime.

Episode 18

Left: anime episode 18

Right: Okita route, chapter 6. The event is similar but takes place when Hijikata leads a retreat from Utsunomiya. Hijikata's attitude is also different.
Left: anime episode 18

Right: Kondou route in Hakuouki Zuisouroku.
They swapped Chizuru with kid Souji! XD

Episode 19

Left: anime episode 19 (memory). (Season 1 quality. XD)

Right: Saitou's event in common route. Same event as anime.

Episode 20

Left: anime episode 20

Right: Hijikata route. Same event as anime.

Episode 22 (end)

Left: anime episode 22

Right: Hijikata route.
Left: anime episode 22

Right: Hijikata route in Hakuouki Zuisouroku.
Left: anime episode 22

Right: Hijikata route.
Left: anime episode 22

That reminds me... The other day a friend of mine who's in game industry (mainly drawing character portraits and designing costumes) read through the newest issue of B's-Log and said, "I have to admit, of these 30-ish otome games in this magazine, Hakuouki's artwork is the best. Wish I can draw half as good."
Yone's work is pure win. XD

I'm not a type to worship anyone's artwork. And honestly I rarely like official art. But Hakuouki changed me, or more like Yone's works changed me.

Her works are pure win indeed, I just ship and love them so very much. She has clean line art and oh god, the colors... she has great sense of colors. <3
Even her rough sketches are great.

And I should stop fangirling over her here, lol.

Ahhh! Agreed, the effort they're putting in is wonderful. The whole anime is wonderful.

Thank youuu for this. The Hakuoki teams should be paying you for all the help you're giving us foreigners.

You're welcome~ Thank you for your compliment~

The anime is great. They put quite some efforts in the background too. I remember my jaw dropped when seeing Saitou do a proper 鯉口切る(pushing the sword out of sheath a little bit) before drawing out the whole sword. :D

hmmm...it's true...there's so many scenes i noticed got in the anime (mostly in season 1). i compared the cg in the zuisorouku illustration book with the anime. there's scene where Souji just having a bath and letting down his hair, chizuru waking up heisuke in his room while he's hugging his pillow and sano's waiting for chizuru when she had sweets with sen. ahh..it'll take the whole page >.<

but overall, i'm glad they animated this~

I don't have access to the game (alas!) but I really do appreciate finding out everything I can about it. It's so nice to know that the anime is sticking so close to the story in some ways that it even reproduces scenes like this. The artwork is simply amazing! Thanks for comparing the two in this way for us!

The anime even incorporates Zuisouroku contents. I love the amount of efforts they put into this anime. :D

Yone sensei really knows how to draw. Her work is really some of the best art I have ever seen. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your wonderful comparisons on the future! ^_^

SaiChizu event
Thank you very much for making the list!

Am I the only one here feeling sorry for Saitou in EP 14?
IIRC, it was actually his major event before the confession XD.

Saitou route OVA please!

Re: SaiChizu event
You're welcome~
I feel sorry too, having his event trimmed like that. But... it's not his route. *sigh* Compared with the others who probably won't get any of their events after chapter 4, I feel lucky. *sweatdrop*
It's a major event for his determination too. At this rate, I believe they'll use Saitou route's version for why he stay in Aizu. Just give me the event he confronts Hijikata (and pleeease be in quality as good as this episode) and I'll be content. What happens in Hijikata route doesn't do him justice. T_T

I love these comparisons that you do. I haven't seen the anime, so it's nice to see the highlighted parts that compare with the games ^^

Wow it's awesome. Seeing this makes me think that having started with the game instead of the anime wouldn't have been too bad either.;)
Can't wait to play the games anyway^^

I recognized a lot of scenes too, but not everyone you listed X°°D *above all those one where also a only thing changes*

Just as everyone said, Kazuki-sensei has a really beautiful style ^^ *love*

Yone's art is really pretty. (Nod) I should look into it more.

Lol, surprised at the more bloodiness compared to the anime ;)

Would you consider Hakuouki a visual novel?
tokio_fujita
Dec. 12th, 2011 05:59 pm (UTC)
Anime is rated E for everyone. XD
It's visual novel IMO, since it's just reading, making choices, and reading more. Otomate sucks at making "games" anyway (glares at Yuugiroku). So I'm content with a visual novel with beautiful art and great seiyuu. ;)

#Hakuouki
uwaaah? I didn't expect you to say something like that (lol) since your journal is filled with Hakououki stuff and seems to touch on a lot of its elements, including the stories.
tokio_fujita
Dec. 12th, 2011 09:33 pm (UTC)
Huh? I never said Hakuoki isn't good. XD
I didn't mention "story" because I was talking about Otomate in general, and generally Otomate makes lame stories. :P (Hakuoki is one of the few exceptions.)
And when making "games" you can actually "play", Otomate is horrible. The examples being Yuugiroku and B's Log Party, packed with 3-year-old mini games that lack originality and gameplay. So visual novel is the safest style Otomate can handle. ;)

Ooh, I apologize. Thanks for clearing that up. I saw "otomate" and for some reason, immediately thought that Hakuouki might've been in the same league.

I believe there's a Hakuouki Sengoku fighting game on it's way. What do you think of that then?
